Smoke alarms save lives! If there is a fire at your home, you may have as little as two minutes to get out safely. From the National Fire Protection Association:
Roughly three out of five deaths happen in homes with either no smoke alarms or smoke alarms that do not work.
More than one-third of home fire deaths happen in homes that do not have smoke alarms.
The risk of dying in a home fire is cut in half when you have working smoke alarms.
Take these steps to protect your family:
Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area, on every level of your home, and in your basement.
Test all of your smoke alarms at least once per month. Press the test button to make sure the alarm is working. Daylight Saving Time in the fall and spring also are good times to test your alarms.
Interconnected smoke alarms can provide the best protection - when one alarm sounds, they all do.
Replace your smoke alarms every 10 years; look for the date on each alarm.
When your smoke alarms sound, get outside and stay there. Call 911 once you're out.
