[ARCHIVED] 12/18 UPDATE: Two victims identified, suspect arraigned in Dec. 16 Algonquin Street shooting

Dec. 18, 2023 UPDATE:

Battle Creek Police have identified the two deceased victims, as well as the suspect, in the apparent shooting in the 200 block of Algonquin Street the evening of Saturday, Dec. 16.

The victims are 44-year-old Steven Douglas Cica and 22-year-old Veronica Jean Cica. The victims have also been confirmed as father and daughter.

The suspect was identified as 22-year-old Todd Edward Bolden, Jr. Bolden was arraigned today, Monday, Dec. 18, in Calhoun County Court on two counts of murder and one count of carrying a firearm in the commission of a crime. He was also denied bond during today's arraignment.

It was also confirmed that there is a child in common between Bolden and Veronica.

BCPD shared that they had responded to an earlier call on the afternoon of Saturday, Dec. 16, at the same address in the 200 block of Algonquin Street, to reports of vandalism and a fight breaking out. Upon their arrival, the suspect, who was identified as Bolden, had left the scene. No assault was reported and no weapon had been seen by witnesses, and police only noted property damage.

Dec. 17, 2023 UPDATE: 

The 44-year-old man hospitalized after the apparent shooting on Algonquin Street Saturday evening has died from his injuries.

The suspect, a 22-year-old man, voluntarily turned himself in to police today, and is in the Calhoun County Jail.

Dec. 16, 2023 original release:

A 22-year-old woman has died, and a 44-year-old man is critically injured from apparent gunshot wounds, and Battle Creek Police are looking for the suspect.

Police were called to the 200 block of Algonquin Street at about 6 p.m. today – Dec. 16. The call was for a person attempting to break into a home. As Calhoun County 911 dispatchers were on the line with the caller, they believed they heard gunshots.

Once police arrived at the home they found the woman inside, and she had died from what appeared to be gunshot wounds. They also found the man inside, with apparent gunshot wounds, and LifeCare Ambulance rushed him to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, where he is in critical condition tonight. The Battle Creek Fire Department also responded to help at the scene.

Police are looking for the suspect, and do not believe the community is in further danger from this incident. Police believe the woman knew the suspect, and the man knows the suspect.
