BATTLE CREEK, Mich. – On Friday, Dec. 19, at 8:57 p.m., the Battle Creek Fire Department responded to a reported vehicle fire inside a detached residential garage. Upon arrival, crews discovered a fully involved vehicle fire inside a large commercial building.
Engine 4 upgraded the call to a commercial structure fire and initiated fire attack. Upon arrival, Chief 3 assumed command of the scene. Engine 5 established a water supply and assisted Rescue 2 with deploying an additional handline. Engine 3 initially served as the Rapid Intervention Team before later assisting with salvage operations alongside Truck 1 and Rescue 6.
The fire was brought under control in about 40 minutes, with crews remaining on scene for nearly three hours to complete overhaul. Firefighting efforts were hampered by cold temperatures and heavy contents inside the building.
Special Notes:
A vehicle was located inside the structure.
One firefighter sustained a minor injury (slip and fall); full recovery is expected.
The rear of the building is a total loss.
The cause remains under investigation.
