BATTLE CREEK, Mich. – The City of Battle Creek will begin work on the Watkins Culvert and Utilities Improvement Project on Monday, March 31.
The project, which enhances city infrastructure and safety, includes installing a new watermain, a small section of new sanitary sewer, and replacing two old culverts.
During this time, Watkins Road will have some closures to allow for construction.
- March 31 to mid-May, Watkins Road, between Helmer Road South to Minges Road South, will be closed to thru traffic.
- Mid-May to July 7, Watkins Road will be completely closed at Minges Road.
- July 7-mid-August, a section of Watkins Road will be completely closed to all traffic—including emergency and utility vehicles—to allow for safe removal and installation of the culvert. The full closure will occur between Minges Road South and Helmer Road, near addresses 3876 and 3929 Watkins Road. While Watkins Road is already closed to through traffic, this segment will be entirely inaccessible during this phase.
Key Project Details:
- Culvert Replacement: Removing old culverts and installing a new concrete box culvert, along with retaining walls and slope stabilization.
- Utility Upgrades: Extensive work on pavement, aggregate base, water mains, and sanitary sewers.
