BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — A Battle Creek Police cadet disarmed a five-year-old child holding a loaded handgun while serving a subpoena on Inn Road Saturday, Jan. 25.
The cadet called for a road patrol officer after the child initially answered the door with a large kitchen knife; when the cadet asked the child to have an adult come to the door, the child returned with the loaded handgun, which the cadet removed.
Once road patrol officers arrived, two adult males and one adult female were located inside the residence, detained, and transported to the police department for questioning.
Due to the handgun and the deplorable condition of the home, five children — ranging from 8 years old to 6 months old — were turned over to Child Protective Services. LifeCare Ambulance transported one of the children to Bronson Battle Creek Hospital and then later to a hospital in Kalamazoo due to health concerns.
Code Compliance condemned the residence, and officials are pursuing weapon charges and neglect charges through the Calhoun County Prosecutor's Office.
