BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — The City of Battle Creek recently transitioned its Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests to a digital platform.
The new centralized records request portal will streamline the FOIA process and save valuable resources, according to Battle Creek City Attorney Bill Kim.
Information about the new FOIA process and how to submit a request is available on the city website here: https://battlecreekmi.gov/953/FOIA---Public-Record-Request
The NextRequest service automates FOIA request routing to staff, tracks the status of requests, and assists with redacting sensitive information. The system enhances transparency and efficiency, making it easier for the public to access government records while reducing the workload on staff.
While much of the process remains the same, residents who submit a FOIA request online can expect to receive a confirmation response within 24 hours. The city will provide an initial response within five business days granting the request, granting it in part and denying it in part, denying it, or alerting you that the information you requested is publicly available or available elsewhere. The city may also notify requestors that the response timeline will be extended for another 10 business days.
A fee may be charged to cover the city’s costs for producing public documents pursuant to the FOIA. A good faith fee estimate will also be charged if the estimated cost is more than $50. This invoice will reflect anticipated labor costs for collecting and reviewing responsive documents. Once payment of a good faith estimate is received, city staff will continue processing the request.
Neighbors who require assistance are encouraged to stop by the information desk at city hall where a public computer kiosk will soon be available for residents to use to submit FOIA requests.
