BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — City contractors will begin construction activities at Claude Evans Park next week.
Beginning Monday, Sept. 9, crews will clear the lot north of Helen Montgomery Avenue to make way for new parking lots and other improvements at the Washington Heights area park, located at 320 Washington Ave. N.
Once the north lot is cleared, Helen Montgomery Avenue will be closed between Hudson Street and Parkway Drive for the construction of the new parking lots and other enhancements.
In addition to new parking lots, the Claude Evans Park improvement project will deliver a new cul-de-sac at the south end of Hanover Street, a retention pond for stormwater, and additional lighting and cameras for enhanced safety.
The park will remain open during construction, with minor diversions. A portion of the existing parking lot on Helen Montgomery Avenue will be closed, and neighbors on Hanover Street will need to take alternate routes to access the park. Driveway access for residents should not be obstructed, and the city will notify residents in advance if Republic Services’ yard waste, recycling, and garbage pickups will be impacted during construction. As a reminder, the park’s splash pad is now closed for the season, as well.
Work hours during the improvement project will generally be 7 a.m.-7 p.m., Monday-Friday, with occasional work on Saturdays. The bulk of construction is expected to wrap up by Nov. 30, 2024.
