Other information: The Battle Creek Fire Department responded to a hazardous materials incident at a manufacturing facility shortly after 11:30 a.m. today, Saturday, Aug. 24.

Upon arrival, Rescue 2 discovered a 55-gallon drum of waste material undergoing a chemical reaction and overheating. HazMat 1 was called to the scene for additional support.

Using specialized equipment, including a thermal imaging camera and air monitoring devices, Rescue 2 ensured the drum was safe to move. The BCFD then mitigated the chemical reaction and removed the remaining material from the structure.

LifeCare Ambulance was on the scene to provide medical support if needed. No injuries were reported. The incident was resolved in approximately an hour and a half.
