UPDATE 3/14 - Please note we have updated this to the correct residency information. Any Michigan resident can apply for a firearm license at any Michigan police department. The law allows for this and we initially provided the wrong information. We apologize for this!

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — The Battle Creek Police Department has shared new hours for neighbors seeking a firearm license, beginning this week.

Neighbors may visit BCPD to obtain a firearm license during the following new hours:

  • Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The official document you’ll receive when applying for a firearm license is called a License to Purchase a Firearm (RI-010A).

In order to obtain a firearm license from BCPD, neighbors must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen
  • Have a Michigan photo ID with their current address
  • Live in Live in Michigan (any Michigan resident can do this at any Michigan police department)

An application for a firearm license needs to be signed in the presence of a notary before background checks are completed. BCPD’s Administrative/Records Division can notarize the application for neighbors for $5. There is no charge for a firearm license.

The firearm license is valid for 30 days. If you decide not to purchase a weapon, you must return the firearm license to BCPD by the listed expiration date.

After a firearm is purchased, the licensing authority copy of the firearm license must be returned to the BCPD Administrative/Records Division within 10 days.

Neighbors can continue to drop off firearm licenses and sales records, at either the front desk in the lobby or in the drop box in the station’s vestibule, during BCPD’s lobby hours:

  • Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Tuesday and Thursday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

As a reminder, neighbors no longer need to bring in their firearms for inspection by BCPD, as part of the license/sale record process.
